PBIS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS) is a multi-tiered framework to improve and integrate all of the data, systems, and practices affecting student outcomes every day.
PBIS Mission Statement
The purpose of PBIS at The Early Childhood Center is to establish and maintain a safe and effective school environment that maximizes the academic achievement and social-emotional-behavioral competencies in young children.
Why do we teach behavioral expectations?
-
To build a school culture that is predictable and focused on student success.
-
Just as in academics, we use the instructional framework to build social-emotional/behavioral skills.
-
Skill deficit and performance deficit require more teaching and practice to resolve.
-
Behaviors are taught in the actual settings where behaviors are to occur.
Why do we acknowledge students?
-
Positive interactions between students and adults builds relationships. Positive relationships build positive behaviors.
-
An acknowledgement system prompts adults to respond positively when a student engages in the behavior expectation.
What happens when students do not demonstrate school-wide/classroom expectations?
Expectations:
Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Kind
-
Behavior errors are indicators of lagging skill sets in young children that have not yet been learned to fluency. They require reteaching, modeling, and practicing in the setting in which they occur.
-
Behavior reports with clear guidelines for what is handled in classroom vs office (minor/major) referrals are completed to collect data to look for patterns or trends of unwanted behaviors.
-
Student-Teacher reflection time to discuss why the behavior occurred, what could have been done differently, and creating an action plan to improve.
-
Note, in young children, negative consequences are not used to change behavior patterns over the long term. These types of consequences will “keep a lid on” but teaching and modeling are the best ways to change behavior patterns.
Why do we provide parents with PBIS surveys and updates on the fidelity of our PBIS implementation?
-
Surveys provide feedback to staff that allows us to see, “Are we doing what we said we would do?” and “Is it benefitting students and families?”
-
Results are used to identify building priorities and yearly action planning.
-
To help connect home/school life and increase positive behaviors in both settings.
-
To recognize families as the first teachers of their child.
